"Mr President, I too would like to compliment Simona and also Karl-Heinz Florenz and others for working on these reports. The bottom line here is that we have too much waste and we must do everything we can to reduce it. And these measures which we have passed here today, and which I was pleased to vote in favour of, will hopefully mean that Member States will do everything they can to move to a circular economy. These reports are strong and balanced positions for the European Parliament and they will help us to move towards a more resource-efficient and sustainable economy.
It is a big challenge, but one that must be met. For instance in 2010 EU waste production was 2 520 million tonnes, of which only 36% was recycled. The remainder was put into landfills and incinerators. Up to 600 million tonnes of this could have been recycled and the resources returned to productive use, but instead was wasted completely. This is just a synopsis of what is happening. We have got to eliminate municipal waste and general waste and move to a circular economy."@en1
