"Mr President, on 15 June we will see the abolition of roaming charges across Europe, and it has come to my attention that some mobile operators in Ireland are altering the terms of customer contracts before the abolition of charges due to kick in in June. I have spoken to a number of consumers whose mobile providers have informed them that they are planning to change their terms and conditions in order to offer unlimited data to home users while charging an additional price for, and capping, data when users are roaming in the EU. I believe that this is an attempt to circumvent EU law and the roam-like-at-home principle. We need to be tough on these operators. It must be made clear that there is no loophole whereby part of the domestic data allowance could be regarded as a gift or a side benefit and would not count when travelling abroad. The end of the roaming charge, as we all know, was a hugely popular consumer initiative that took many years to complete. It demonstrated to customers and consumers across the EU the very positive side of the European Union and the benefits that it offers them. What is involved here is roaming charges by stealth, pure and simple."@en1
