"Mr President, this legislation is supposedly intended to ensure that visa liberalisation is not abused. It is supposed to ease the concerns of Member States, those concerns being that visa-free access for Ukraine and Georgia will lead to another influx of migrants. This is quite reasonable, given that Ukraine and Georgia have a combined population of 45 million people, while the average income in Georgia is GBP 320 per month and the average income in Ukraine is GBP 160 per month.
If visa-free access is agreed, many hundreds of thousands, or even perhaps millions of people, will come to Europe and very many – visa or no visa – will not leave. These measures are in fact a pathway for the EU to conclude visa-free agreements with those countries. While the UK is not bound by this legislation, the UKIP MEPs will oppose it."@en1
