Small transport businesses are particularly hard to evaluate because of their varied profiles depending on the mode of transport, country, type of service provided and the competition structure of the market in which they operate. Thanks to their more detailed knowledge of the local market, greater proximity to the customer and in many cases agility and ability to innovate, small businesses can improve transport for each individual passenger. This report underlines the necessity of support for SMEs at European level, in order to face the considerable challenges they are constantly confronting. Investing in their development and deploying synergies between different Member States would assist in building the single European transport area for the benefit of passengers."@en1
