"EU-Turkey relations have become increasingly strained since the attempted coup. The biggest source of tension is the crackdown in the aftermath of the coup, including the persecution of journalists and the possible reintroduction of the death penalty. The viability of the migration deal has been called into question with Erdoğan becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress towards EU accession. He has issued an ultimatum to the EU on this issue and suggested that Turkey may give up its ambitions to become an EU member."@en1
