"UKIP voted against this decision to grant discharge and close the accounts for ITER. Discharge is a procedure whereby the EU parliament looks at the internal budgets of each EU agency and institution and gives an opinion on its implementation. ITER was set up in March 2007 for a period of 35 years and involves the Commission, Member States and third countries. The aim is the research and development of a new source of fusion energy. The final budget for the financial year 2014 included commitment appropriations of EUR 1 168 800 000 and payment appropriations of EUR 576 600 000. This vote was a decision regarding discharge (non-binding opinion) and a decision on closing the accounts for the relevant body. While of course UKIP supports international cooperation on issues such as this on a bilateral basis, UKIP’s general position on discharge votes is to refuse the granting of discharge, in order to register our opposition to EU bodies and the EU spending British taxpayer’s money."@en1
