"I voted against this report for a number of reasons. Overall, the compromises do not reflect the present reality in Iran. Likewise, there is a clear lack of balance in tone and substance when it comes to serious problems such as human rights violations, corruption, and the role of Iran in the region, in particular concerning its support for the Assad regime. Instead, there is too much emphasis on trade and investment, especially since there is already an opinion from Committee on International Trade covering those aspects in detail. I, along with my colleagues in ALDE, submitted a number of amendments to the report aimed at rebalancing the text and putting more emphasis on human rights, stronger condemnation of Iran’s negative role in the Middle East (particularly in Syria). Unfortunately, these amendments did not pass and therefore I was unable to support the report. Additionally, the wording on the death penalty, free and fair elections, protection of religious minorities and torture should be much stronger."@en1
