"Mr President, as a Member of the Iranian delegation it was a pleasure to attend the debate here last night and indeed to observe the very pertinent and proper concerns expressed by Members regarding human rights in Iran. Having said that, it is also important to recognise the progress made and the road which Iran has travelled in getting the nuclear accord, so for that reason, as we move forward, we have to engage with Iran and develop trade relations so that economically it can benefit. History shows that where there is economic benefit there is a greater tendency to move towards human rights so the two can go in tandem: economic relations being developed between the EU and Iran, but also, as many amendments pointed out today, their need to reform, especially in relation to human rights and the death penalty."@en1
