"Madam President, I was very pleased to support this resolution today and to vote with my group on all matters. This is very important and there is great credit due to Marietje Schaake, the rapporteur, for the good work she has done. It is somewhat incongruous that a European Union that is so committed to peace and human rights across the globe would also be exporting goods which could be used for torture and capital punishment. It is absolutely right that we should move to end that practice wherever it may be. I am pleased to say that in my own country, Ireland, there is no evidence of any such practice. There have been no applications made by Irish companies under the regulation and the Department of Jobs is not aware of any of those goods being either exported or imported. I hope that will become the norm across the European Union. We are trying to help in the whole area of human rights, and especially to end the death penalty, which is another manifestation of man’s inhumanity to man."@en1
