"Mr President, we would like to support the ECR’s recommendation. I cannot believe that the Conference of Presidents have selected Mr Verhofstadt as someone who will be negotiating on behalf of the European Parliament regarding Brexit. I have been in this Parliament for six years and I have heard the ramblings of Mr Verhofstadt: I am telling you now, he is no friend of Britain.
The last time I spoke in this Parliament, I said that we need to be cool, we need to be calm, we need to ensure that we all get the best deal. Mr Verhofstadt’s appointment is no good for French farmers, and no good for British car manufacturers who sell a lot of cars into Britain. We need the best deal possible, and I ask you, please, to rethink Mr Verhofstadt’s appointment and come up with a more neutral candidate."@en1
