"Mr President, global food demand is increasing and is expected to increase by 70% by 2050. Healthy food and optimal nutrition is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today and in the future. Challenges to an increasing global food demand include shrinking land availability, environmental loss and degradation, water shortages, increased energy demand and the emergence of new pests and diseases.
All of these challenges are putting huge pressure on the agricultural sector and so they must be properly addressed. New technologies have the potential to play an important role in making farming more productive and sustainable and allow the agricultural sector to overcome these many challenges. It is important to ensure there is a vibrant agricultural sector within the EU and a wide range of innovative technologies should be developed across all farming types.
Irish companies have been at the forefront of developing agricultural technology for many years now. A combination of Ireland’s large high-tech talent pool along with Ireland’s strong agricultural sector has meant that Ireland has the capacity to develop many innovative agricultural technologies that are badly needed."@en1
