"Mr President, having worked myself on a voluntary basis in Malawi a few years ago, I have seen the poverty there and I see the way forward. And that is why I welcome this report. I support the EPP vote in favour as it is hugely important to support family farming and local agriculture in order to support a developing country.
Ireland is a strong agricultural economy, and I am happy to be able to support an initiative that aims to improve the livelihoods of the farming community in sub-Saharan Africa. Agricultural investment policies in Africa should be linked to and support the development of the local economy, including family farming and smaller landholders, along with bigger commercial farms. The New Alliance has made a commitment to promote inclusive agricultural-based growth that supports small-scale farming and helps reduce poverty, hunger and under-nutrition in countries in sub-Saharan Africa."@en1
