"I voted in favour of this own-initiative report because the directive, of which the report calls for the implementation, needs to be transposed. It is a much needed update to parental leave legislation which better reflects the position of women in today’s labour market. It also serves as a great example of how our membership of the EU provides much needed support for parents that would not be provided by the Conservative government. The antiquated view that bringing up children should be the sole responsibility of mothers is holding back progress for gender equality. In addition, full implementation of this directive would give hundreds of thousands of fathers the ability to spend quality time with their new children after birth. The Labour Party believes that everyone, regardless of the employment sector they work in, the type of contract they have, or the gender that they or their partner are, should be guaranteed the right to parental leave without discrimination."@en1
