"This was a very important resolution which I voted in favour of and which aims to challenge ‘food fraud’. I have actively worked on the issue of food fraud in my capacity as an MEP since 2013.
The resolution concerned the traceability of fishery and aquaculture products in restaurants. This is of particular importance as my country is an island and the fishing industry is a key economic industry.
Moreover, in recent years, there has been a proliferation of seafood which has been unlabelled or mislabelled. This threatens the livelihoods of fishermen and seafood traders and it facilitates illegal and unregulated fishing practices. Furthermore, it is also not in the consumers’ interests.
This resolution highlights the importance of traceability through all stages of production, processing and distribution and proper legal labelling. This will benefit both consumers and fishing communities across Ireland.
Sinn Féin will further continue to ensure that criminal activity in the food processing industry is combatted."@en1
