"Madam President, the decision to suspend the Mejlis in Crimea is quite simply a breach of the right to freedom of association, and it follows the enforced disappearance of at least six Crimean Tatars and the forcible detention of Tatars in Pionerske, with the taking of fingerprints and DNA. This represents a new wave of repression against the Crimean Tatar people since the Russian annexation, and it has an historic echo four decades after their entire population was deported to remote parts of the then Soviet Union. My Group draws attention to the long-standing discrimination against Tatars, documented by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO). We remain convinced that we should diplomatically engage with Russia and we believe Tatars should be protected under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. On behalf of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I met, in Kyiv, Refat Chubarov, one of the two banned Tatar leaders who continue to campaign for their people from outside Crimea. We told them we would not forget them, and today we remind the whole of Europe of their plight."@en1
