"Mr President, I am addressing myself to colleagues but also to working people in the UK, which of course is most people. The overwhelming majority of people work. According to the target, it is supposed to be 75%. In fact, in the UK, it is 79% of men and 69% of women. Why is that? It is partly because these measures, such as they are, such as exist already, do not work properly.
The rights that people in the UK have to date they have got partly through this place, through these institutions, and partly through the trade unions having sued the Labour Government almost 20 years ago now. I ask people in the UK: if it took trade unions to sue a Labour Government, what is the chance that we will get the kind of rights that people need – separate parental leave so that more than one percent of men can afford to stay at home – what is the chance that we will get that from the Tory Government? The answer is none. We will only get these rights from here."@en1
