"I support the adoption of a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) and replacing and repealing Council Decisions 2009/371/JHA, 2009/934/JHA, 2009/935/JHA, 2009/936/JHA and 2009/968/JHA. I believe that it is essential to create a harmonised, high level of data protection covering police and judicial activities in the Union as a means of respecting and safeguarding the fundamental rights of Union citizens. Such a regulation would ensure effectiveness and consistency in relation to the privacy rights of citizens, while simultaneously providing a high standard in judicial and policing affairs. Given that Ireland has an opt-out under Protocol 21 on Justice and Home Affairs, it is therefore up to the Irish government to choose if they participate or not. It is my understanding that the Irish government will participate."@en1
