"Mr President, we are having this debate because of the effect of Chinese dumping on the steel industry in particular. I am very proud to say that I worked for 20 years in the steel industry. I started off way back when there was such a thing as British Steel, a company that started in Wolverhampton, and I had a very good long career in the steel trade. During that time, I have seen the British steel trade decline, and although it is still fighting hard and is technologically far more advanced than it ever was, it is still up against it.
I share the frustrations of the protesters outside. This is a time when the politicians really need to be helping our industry and our people. I represent the West Midlands of England, an area that grew to be great through the steel trade, through the manufacture and production of steel. That is how we became a world—famous area, and I am very proud of that as well. But now we are a shadow of what we once were. Yes, some of it is to do with appallingly bad British Government decisions over the years – no one to blame but ourselves. Some of it is due to the application of crazy directives about green taxation and carbon emissions, which has caused damage to us. But now we have aggressive dumping by China, which is distorting the market. This is not about free trade. It is a hostile act to destroy our steel industry.
If we allow this aggressive dumping, we will lose a vital part of our manufacturing base. We will lose a vital part of our tradition and our history – certainly in the UK – and it is strategically vital that we keep an operational steel industry. So, first and foremost, I would ask the British Government to act on this – to have some guts for once and stand up for British manufacturing. But even then, I would urge the people here, just once, to do one thing to help manufacturing and not give China market economy status."@en1
