"I voted in favour of this proposal that aims to develop and improve safety whilst improving access to the market for rail transport services. This Railway Safety Directive (RSD) constitutes a part of the technical pillar along with Interoperability Directives (IOD) and the European Railways Agency (ERA) Regulation.
EU railways are among the safest in the world, with transport performance growing strongly and the number of train passenger casualties having decreased by more than 75% over the past 40 years. However, a high level of safety has to be maintained and continuously reviewed. The different approaches to safety among the Member States constitute a crucial technical barrier to EU-wide transport and therefore to the creation of a single European railway area. The new rules facilitate the European Railways Agency in its task of progressively harmonising national rules through common safety standards in an efficient and cost-effective manner."@en1
