"This report was part of a trio of reports which were purportedly concerned with improving and changing the structures of the European rail network. However, the railway package as a whole moves the sector in the direction of a single, more competitive, liberalised railway sector and the creation of a single European Railway Agency.
Whilst the three resolutions, including this vote, were largely concerned with removing technical barriers in inter-EU cross-border rail transport, the overarching aim was that of competitive liberalisation, often at the expense of the ordinary citizen. Moreover, the package aims to do away with ‘hidden discrimination’ against companies who wish to enter the market. This constitutes a reduction in Member States’ control over the sector, and is not a matter for the EU to be deciding on.
Therefore, I voted against this report."@en1
