"I was very happy to support this report along with my ALDE colleagues. Many coastal and island regions in Ireland and the EU are facing a significant economic decline, which is resulting in depopulation and the exodus of their inhabitants. It is precisely in such areas where the pressure in terms of using the sea’s resources is growing, and the fisheries sector is being marginalised in favour of tourism.
Thankfully this report addresses these structural issues and offers solutions to support small-scale and coastal fisheries in the EU. The report calls on the Commission to take into account socio-economic and environmental considerations and to promote, through the regionalisation process, a new definition of coastal fishing in line with the specificities of each fishery. It also calls on the Commission and on Member States to gradually increase the quotas allocated to non-industrial fisheries, in order to boost socially and sustainable forms of fishing. This is vital for the continuation of small-scale coastal fishing which is of historical and traditional importance."@en1
