"Macedonia has been a candidate country for EU membership since December 2005. Its integration process has been somewhat stalled in recent years, however. While Macedonia’s membership has been backed by the European Parliament and the Commission, the Council has blocked its progression as a result of the naming conflict with Greece. The recent political crisis in Macedonia which came about as a result of a wire—tapping scandal and the intimidating of journalists is another factor in Macedonia’s lack of progression in EU membership. This has caused considerable tension in the run up to Parliamentary elections this June. I support this report’s reiteration that in order to ensure continuity of support to the Macedonian progress towards EU membership, Macedonia must prepare these elections to the highest international standards and support the right to freedom of speech while also improve its overall policy alignment with those of the EU’s."@en1
