"Labour MEPs voted to end the current agreement with Philip Morris International because it has not fulfilled its aim of reducing the illegal tobacco trade. The agreement requires the company to pay an annual fee to the EU and to pay a fine if their own cigarettes are seized during smuggling, but there have been few seizures of genuine branded products.
Philip Morris is also actively opposing the Tobacco Products Directive, despite it containing a framework for the tracking and traceability of tobacco products. There are 700 000 smoking-related premature deaths every year in the EU and we should not be extending agreements that do not work. Instead, Labour MEPs want to see the Tobacco Products Directive framework up and running, and new proposals for tackling unbranded cigarettes."@en1
