"Madam President, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That is a wise old saying in English, which sadly seems to have been lost in translation with the European Commission. British ports are world—class in service, performance and efficiency, and the way to compete globally is to reward excellence, not to level down the playing field. Unfortunately, the port services regulation does exactly that. It is another example of one-size-fits-all legislation that threatens to blunt the commercial edge of Britain’s ports. This tidal wave of red tape and bureaucracy means that Hull, Immingham and Grimsby in my constituency risk damaging their hard—earned competitiveness, compromising future investment and growth. I voted against this legislation and will continue to support the unions and employers who are working together to create a new sense of optimism in my region."@en1
