"Madam President, I supported the calls made by Scottish ports and trade unionists, as did the rest of the European Parliamentary Labour Party, to reject this proposal. We believe a one—size—fits—all proposal does not recognise the diversity and complexity of ports across the European Union, and particularly in the UK and Scotland. Although the proposed piece of law will now enter a negotiation process, it is important that MEPs in the negotiating team and those representing the Council, where the UK Government has a say, recognise the UK’s legitimate concerns on this issue. There is some way to go before this House will vote on a final proposal so let us make sure that in this time the necessary exemptions for UK ports are included in the negotiation and hopefully a good result will come forward."@en1
