"Mr President, having being here in the last mandate, right throughout the recession, and seen the continuous efforts being made by yourself, Commissioner, and particularly Commissioner Barnier at the time, to get to grips with the problems and to try and put regulation in place that would ensure that these problems did not occur again, it is good that we should now take stock and look at what is happening and indeed insulate ourselves from any occurrences in the future. The last speaker pointed out, for instance, the possible consequences of shale gas for companies and consequently for the European economy. We can take nothing for granted, and for that reason we have to be vigilant all the time. I particularly welcome the creation of a banking union and the discipline that this will bring into the whole banking system, but as pointed out we have to be on our guard continuously for the future of European citizens."@en1
