"Madam President, in August of this year, my staff and I were threatened with a pistol in northern France – i.e. not in the unstable areas of the EU mentioned in this report. Just as the single market and the free movement of people facilitates legal trade, by greater measure it also facilitates illegal trade. The reality of this means that those with the will to carry out horrific attacks like those in Paris are free to move almost anywhere in Europe, and the weapons of terror they rely on remain easy to obtain.
All the EU can do in response is to propose to ban antique and deactivated firearms. I certainly do not remember the Paris attackers raiding the Tower of London to gain access to their high—powered AK—47s. But, since the EU refuses to act in stopping criminal gangs having the free run of the eurozone, are we at all surprised that the traffickers and some migrants are armed? Despite the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, claiming credit for the stricter application of COARM criteria, this will do nothing to limit the use of illicit weapons by those who wish to challenge our very existence. In fact, none of the hand—wringing proposals in this document will stop the flow of weaponry into the hands of terrorists without definitive action to put proper checks in place at borders and limit the flow of people to Europe.
At the same time as criminal gangs are free to use unlicensed weapons across Europe, in Syria groups like the Peshmerga are starved of weaponry and ammunition and training. Now is the time to stop talking and act. We must arm the Peshmerga, close our porous borders and regain control of our own security so that the principles espoused in this House are not used as a weapon against us."@en1
