"Whilst I have some reservations about a lack of focus in parts of this report, I am happy to support the overall direction of this file. Following the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, a review of the rules for technical measures is desperately needed to accommodate the two new elements of the CFP, the landing obligation and regionalisation. Conservative MEPs are always calling for better implementation of EU policies, and almost nowhere is that more necessary than in the CFP. A number of the changes suggested in this report would be very welcome when the Commission publishes its legislative proposals, particularly greater involvement of fishermen in decision making and better support for fishermen in terms of innovation, training and equipment that can help them minimise discards. Better use of scientific evidence in managing fish stocks is also critical. There is still much work to be done in improving the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy, and this report is a welcome step in the right direction."@en1
