"Mr President, I am pleased to vote for this report calling for a real commitment from Member States to tackle child poverty and reduce social inequalities.
Across the EU, one in four children are living in poverty, and in my own constituency of London this increases to a shocking 37%. Many MEPs in this House were proud to support the report’s call for a child guarantee fund for each child to have access to free healthcare, childcare and education, as well as decent housing and adequate nutrition. Tomorrow in the UK Parliament, the Conservative Government will pursue further its shameful plans to cut in-work social security and will push an estimated 640 000 more children in London into poverty next year.
In contrast, under Labour Governments before 2010, the number of children living in absolute poverty fell substantially. I and my colleagues will therefore continue to fight for child poverty to be eradicated everywhere."@en1
