"I voted against the notion of transnational lists for elections to this Parliament, and also against the proposed single European constituency. The EU is currently going through a number of parallel crises of a nature never seen before in its history. Whilst, as part of the efforts to overcome these crises, it is necessary for the EU institutions and this House to reengage with the citizens, the recommendations contained in this report, if enacted, will do the opposite. Democracy must come from the grassroots up, not the other way round. Attempts to replace parties of mass membership with European political constructs seem, in my view, destined to fail. Mandatory thresholds will result in diminishing diversity. And the continued attempts by the large political groups in the House to gain for themselves a permanent stranglehold on power will only lead to further disengagement with the citizens we are elected to represent. I therefore voted against this report in the final vote."@en1
