"Mr President, Commissioner Bulc, I very much look forward to your aviation package next month. Aviation has been very good for Europe. Liberalisation of our airways has been extremely good for passengers and, most importantly, for businesses, and yes, you are right, some airlines are doing well, others are not doing well at all. We have seen consolidation. We have seen the birth of new airlines that are serving our regions extremely well and, as has been mentioned by previous speakers, we speak of Ryanair and EasyJet that are getting to our outermost regions. But I urge you to act on issues such as the Single European Skies, passenger rights and slots. We need to address them – you appreciate that, I know – to improve competitiveness of European airlines.
On another point, I welcome the fact that we are going to engage with airlines outside the EU such as the Gulf States. I think it is important that we try to build comprehensive aviation agreements with these airlines. It is an important step, because they are not going to go away. Our passengers and businesses in Europe are using them now, and they will not appreciate us building a fortress around Europe and being protectionist about our airlines here. We need to engage in comprehensive agreements, and I wish you well in that, and Parliament will be engaging, because it is essential that we do so. We are operating in a global economy now and we cannot be inward-looking, trying to protect what we have historically. We must look forward for the benefit of our consumers and those that are doing business on a global scale."@en1
