"Mr President, I am very much in favour of these proposals and obviously I supported them. I think we have now – moving away from the crisis – looked at some of the malpractices that went on over many years, in particular in relation to tax evasion and tax avoidance, and we are moving towards correcting the loopholes. I welcome that, and the mandatory exchange of information will make it much more difficult for businesses to avoid tax – something which happened far too frequently in the past and which was very unfair to businesses and to individuals who were paying their tax.
I am glad to say that my own country, Ireland, was one of the early movers in relation to international initiatives on the automatic exchange of tax information, being the fourth country in the world to sign a Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) agreement with the United States, which it did during Ireland’s presidency of the European Council."@en1
