"Madam President, I want to focus on one aspect which is extremely important in this report, and that is safety in tourism accommodation. Nine years ago this week, two children from my constituency, Christi and Bobby Shepherd, died in a hotel in Corfu. They died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty boiler in their room. A simple carbon monoxide device, like the one I have here, could have saved their lives. The parents of the children asked me at the time: ‘Are there no safety standards in European tourist accommodation?’ The answer today is still no.
For the past nine years, I have been working with the Commission, with your predecessors, Commissioner, and this year the Commission published the outcome of a Green Paper on tourism safety. Now, Commissioner, it is time to act on that report. The coroner who investigated the deaths of the children has called for action at European level. Public opinion wants action: firefighters, consumer associations and travel agencies. So we now need the Commission to bring forward proposals. We need the support of this Parliament and of all our governments. This is something on which Europe could make a real difference, and we need your support."@en1
