"I abstained from voting on this report because I do not believe that the final text of the draft regulation includes sufficiently strong provisions for the protection of public health and consumer interest. Furthermore, the draft regulation opens the door for food derived from cloned animals and their offspring, despite the strong opposition from Parliament expressed in the September plenary. That said, I do not believe that the outcome of the trilogues is sufficiently serious to justify voting against the report. Voting against would send a negative signal to the UK food and drink industry, which is a European forerunner in technological innovation."@en1
