"I abstained in the final vote of this report because the ECR rapporteur failed to ensure that the final text of the draft regulation includes sufficiently strong provisions for the protection of public health and consumer interest. The EPLP cannot agree with playing down the importance of the precautionary principle. The wording, as it stands, would allow the Commission to update the list of novel foods by means of implementing acts, excluding the scrutiny of Parliament. However, I would argue that the result of the trilogues weren't so bad as to make a vote against make sense, but the abstention will send a strong message to the UK food and drink industry, which is a leader in terms of technological innovation in this sector."@en1
