"I abstained in the final vote on this report, as it fails to ensure sufficiently strong provisions for protection of public health and consumer interest. Playing down the importance of the precautionary principle, especially with regards to the application of new technologies used in food production, is not an option. Furthermore, it is a matter of concern that the draft regulation opens the door for food derived from cloned animals or their offspring, despite the strong opposition from Parliament evident in the vote during the September plenary. The current wording, moreover, allows the Commission to update the list of novel foods by means of implementing acts, which precludes scrutiny by Parliament."@en1
