"Mr President, I found it interesting that MEP Ashworth does not think emotion is important in this debate. Well, when it comes to marketing and selling your food around the world, emotion is important, especially when you are trying to sell your products as clean and green and to use the fact that people are concerned about that. That is done. In Ireland, if we cannot live up to that image – if we are using GM food to feed our cattle, etc. – that damages it.
An interesting point was made by the UKIP MEP, Mr Agnew: would we want to stop it, in the morning? Do we want to stop farmers feeding this in Ireland? I would like to see that happen. Obviously it cannot happen overnight, but I think we should have that goal and that target. We talk about democracy in here, but democracy is about listening to the people, and the people of Europe have consistently expressed the opinion that they do not want GM foods. Please do not tell me you want to feed the world: GM companies want to feed their fat bosses with
and champagne. They do not give a damn about feeding the world; they care about feeding their bloody pockets."@en1
