"I abstained on this report, which was a consent vote on a Council decision on a protocol to the Euro-Med agreement to allow Tunisia to access EU programmes through a Framework Agreement.
The Tunisian Government that was elected last year is in favour of pluralist democracy and the new constitution is generally liberal, inclusive, pro-gender equality and pluralist, and includes protections for all religions and minorities. The Agreement will not be with a particular government but with the Republic of Tunisia
I did not vote against giving consent as I did not wish to block the Tunisian Government from accessing EU civilian programmes that it could find very useful in transitioning to democracy after decades of dictatorship. Programmes named in the justification include cooperation in education, universities, research and Erasmus.
However, one of the programmes Tunisia would be authorised to join is the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy. EU and US military policy in the Middle East and North Africa has resulted in disastrous consequences and the further expansion of this policy is something I oppose, which is why I did not vote in favour of the report.."@en1
