"As we stand today, agricultural products in the EU benefit from geographical indications, namely recognising the distinctive origin of a product where its qualities most likely derive from.
This is essentially a means to protect unique regional and local heritage and we should take responsibility to protect these manufacturers from unfair competition.
Today, the Parliament voted in favour of extending this regulation to non-agricultural products as well. The system is currently very fragmented, as only 15 Member States have this sort of legislation in place.
The Commission should immediately engage in the process of coming up with a proposal to create a system for protection of artisanal arts and crafts.
It is even more important to get this process underway as we must ensure that quality products and craft skills are not jeopardised in trade talks with third parties, as this would be the case with the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)."@en1
