"Madam President, it has often been said and it was said again today that the EU is based on solidarity, or at least it should be. The economic and financial situation Greece faced gave the EU an opportunity to show such solidarity, and unfortunately it took a long time before the EU stepped up to the plate and took any action. Indeed, I would say maybe the lack of action by the EU has made the problems in Greece even worse.
Even with a new agreement in place now, I still think Greece faces huge problems in the future in terms of its economy. Also, of course, it now faces a refugee crisis too. Greece, like other Member States, is facing a huge burden and I would say that perhaps the best way – or one of the best ways – the European Union can help countries like Greece is through the European structural funds. The structural funds should be going to improve the economy and the prosperity of places like Greece. I would also hope that the structural funds could be used to alleviate the problems due to the refugee crisis by helping with funding for infrastructure and social inclusion measures as well. I am pleased that the EU Commissioner, Commissioner Crețu, seems open to that idea in the future.
I would hope that tomorrow we would help to support Greece. Greece needs that help now. It is no good providing this funding sometime in the distant future: we need to provide help and investment to Greece as soon as possible. I support the measures put forward by the Commission. I support this Parliament and the Council taking speedy action to put those measures in place, and I hope tomorrow all colleagues – or as many colleagues as possible – will support these measures to help Greece."@en1
