"Mister President, once again today the European Union has taken a further step in crushing the nation-state and the ability of its people to vote for governments who make their own independent decisions on issues as important as immigration, migration and asylum. The proposals put before this House do not only deal with European Union issues, but they have the arrogance of saying that we, the European Union, can also change international law. We will extend the definition of asylum and refugee to include anyone who is poor from any country. In doing so, you have said to the world that we will open the door to everybody in Africa, the Middle East and Asia who is not a genuine refugee, but simply wants to come here and work. The people who will see their wages reduced, their jobs displaced, the poor, the homeless and the people who have no voice in Europe will be the ones who suffer because of the arrogance of people in this Chamber."@en1
