"Nearly 750 000 young people are out of job in the UK, meaning youngsters are 3 times more likely to be unemployed than the rest of the population, the largest gap in more than 20 years. Meanwhile, also in my country, the government’s schemes for getting young people back to work are doing anything but that, and their solution is forcing youngsters into community work that offers minimal prospects for the future. Little surprise then, that more than half of the UK’s graduates who are at work are in non-graduate jobs – one of the highest rates in Europe. That is why I supported the Sojdrova report and welcome EU initiatives that step up for our youngsters where the government is failing, by developing education strategies that support Member States in sharing best practices, setting up domestic and cross-border partnerships, increasing mobility and backing SME networks and development agencies. Because we simply cannot accept that the only choice for so many of our young people is between a low paid job or work boot camps, as is the case in the UK."@en1
