"I supported the Peillon report given that it sends a clear message on key action points for EU policy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The spate of terrorist attacks that have taken place over the past year and that are directly linked to the region show the need to prioritise the fight against terrorist groups as well as to support democratic reform. Decades of war in the MENA region have taught us that repression and lack of inclusivity are prime breeding grounds for terrorism and should be tackled head on. I also agree the Commission needs to take strong and structural measures to address the problem of young people leaving the EU to fight for terrorist organisations in Syria and Iraq. I furthermore concur with the report’s view on the merits of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme which, if successful, would constitute an historic achievement in advancing peace and stability. I am therefore deeply disappointed that groups on the far right want to see these negotiations fail, and would rather see tensions and mutual distrust continue instead."@en1
