"This own initiative report aims to encourage the Commission to present a legislative proposal aimed at the revision of the aid scheme for the fruit and vegetable sector. However, there were some problematic aspects to this report specifically Recital AE, paragraphs 63 and 71 which welcomed the school milk and school fruit schemes, and the accompanying propaganda measures, as being beneficial for the fruit and vegetable sector. My colleague Matt Carthy was shadow rapporteur on the school milk and fruit scheme and he specifically highlighted that EU Funds should not be spent on advertising EU involvement in the scheme as opposed to the promotion of healthy eating.
However, there were a number of positive aspects to the report including §51 which called on third countries to adhere to the EU’s environmental, social, health, food safety and animal welfare standards if they export to the EU. It was for this reason that I tabled an abstention."@en1
