"I still have reservations about Turkey’s record on civil liberties, including press freedom and gender equality. Women’s rights should be at the core of civil liberties in all EU countries, and the EU should advocate equality between the genders beyond its own borders and particularly in candidate countries. Therefore, until Turkey can demonstrate a strong record in this area, removing all institutionalised inequality towards women, it should not be considered for accession to the EU.
However, Turkey still has a strong role as a democratic link between West and East, and because I hope the country will be making progress in the area of civil liberties I decided to withhold my vote instead of voting against or in favour."@en1
