"Mr President, I voted against this report because, frankly, the EU energy policies have been a colossal disaster. The Large Combustion Plant Directive has closed the power stations in the United Kingdom that provide us with a third of our energy. In my own constituency, Tilbury power station was one of those victims, and hundreds of jobs were lost as a result. If you look at the wider effect on energy prices, we face the chilling prospect of 10 000 to 20 000 people – mostly older folk – dying every year. They are called excess winter deaths, and that is a horrifying euphemism if ever I heard one. They die because they have to choose between heating and eating.
We are going to face this question at a referendum. In 1975 the British people thought they were voting for a common market. Now, with the EU controlling our energy policy, our laws and our borders, and us giving the EU GBP 55 million a day, the public will finally – and only because of UKIP – put this issue to rest so we can reject this Union and its failed policies."@en1
