"In the UK over 80% of people express concerns that we are becoming too dependent on other countries to secure our energy needs and nearly the same number of people say we are not doing enough to tackle climate change. More than two million households in our country suffer from energy poverty, meaning they are not even able to secure the necessary fuel to heat their homes in winter. The answer is clear: acting as a bloc, the EU has the potential to develop new technologies to increase energy production while reducing primary demand, optimise network infrastructure, and diversify supply options to decrease our dependence on uncertain imports from third countries, including Russia. All of this is possible while respecting national energy choices. Meeting the energy needs of our constituents should be a priority even for Conservative and UKIP MEPs. It is therefore disappointing that they are against progress on this issue; could it be down to undue influence of vested interests? The path to energy security lies in an EU strategy that puts energy efficiency first, promotes renewables, and invests money domestically to develop our green technologies industry and create jobs rather than wasting scarce resources on expensive imports."@en1
