"I voted in favour of the Svoboda report because I believe it is crucial that we develop an EU action plan on the enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR) that strikes the right balance between protection and the remuneration of creators, the public interest in accessing cultural content, and the needs of industry.
Conservative parties in Parliament have been pushing for ‘market-based solutions’ to be the dominant approach to IPR, but if this approach is applied blindly across the line, how do we ensure affordable access to knowledge for our students, academics, SMEs and others? Also, while proper enforcement of IPR rules is paramount, we should focus on commercial-scale infringements rather than going after private customers and consumers. And we should make sure fundamental rights are protected.
The bottom line is that intellectual property is not just a technical, far-from-our-bed issue. It touches upon every aspect of our lives, from the performance of our companies to the viability of our cultural sector, to the education of our children, and that is why I urge the Commission to approach this issue with the utmost attention."@en1
