"Madam President, I voted with my group on this proposal, and it was easy to do. It was a non-controversial, but nevertheless very important, report, particularly the title: ‘An action plan’. If you have no plan, you cannot go anywhere, but you also need action to implement the plan.
In my work in the last couple of years as the rapporteur on the Data Protection Regulation for the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), I constantly came across, in particular, artists, SMEs and publishing companies who were very concerned about their intellectual property rights (IPR), especially nowadays in the online world. That is certainly something we need to be aware of and to address.
I would like to emphasise here the importance of getting public support for this and creating public awareness regarding the consequences not only for the economy – and, as our comrade Ms Maletić pointed out, it is costing us EUR 8 billion per year – but also for the creativity of artists and their livelihoods. That is something we have to guard against.
I also welcome the establishment of an expert working group to monitor online infringement of IPR."@en1
