"I voted in favour of the Mosca report on intellectual property rights (IPR) in third countries, given that it strikes the right balance between, on the one hand, consumer rights and, on the other, strong rules on IPR protection, which are crucial to protect our creative and manufacturing industries. I also applaud the attention given by the rapporteur to access to medicines and a patient-focused approach to IPR in the medical sector.
I must say I am concerned by reports that the Commission is taking an increasingly aggressive approach towards countries like India, which excel in the production of high quality generic medicines. They not only comply perfectly with international regulations but are also crucial in ensuring affordable and equal access to high quality medication for wide sections of society.
Let us not forget that monopolies are one of the main reasons why we do not have effective medicines in the EU to combat antimicrobial resistance, and why there is no treatment for many devastating diseases, like Ebola, in the third world.
I urge the Commission to make sure that medicines are not luxury goods available only to the rich few."@en1
